EIGHTEEN DIE IN CONCESSION KOMBI CRASH

Sixteen died on the spot and the remainder at Mvurwi Hospital where the injured are receiving treatment.

Police spokesman Chief Superintendent Oliver Mandipaka said the omnibus was travelling from Harare to Concession. He said the driver lost control of the vehicle after one of the rear tyres came off.

«Preliminary investigations show that the studs on the right rear wheel broke, resulting in the wheel coming off.The vehicle veered off the road before ramming into a tree,» he said.

Chief Supt Mandipaka said preliminary investigations show that 29 pa*sengers were aboard the vehicle, adding that police were still working to identify the deceased.

Local Government, Urban and Rural Development Minister Dr Ignatius Chombo yesterday said Government would cover the funeral expenses. In a statement, he bemoaned the high road carnage recorded this month alone and urged public transporters to ensure safe road travel.

He said a*sistance had also been rendered to the relatives of those who died in the Translux Coach accident that occurred near Louis Trichardt in South Africa on July 17.

«May I register my concern at the apparent upsurge in the loss of life and injury from public transportation accidents,» he said.

«The relatives of the 18 people who perished in Centenary on the 30th of July 2011 (yesterday) will be a*sisted through the District Administrator of Centenary.

«In terms of the provisions of the Civil Protection Act, I have authorised the issuance of limited support to each of the bereaved families as follows: a US$100 standard coffin; US$5 blanket; US$200 «chema»; US$50 for transport and US$20 for mealie-meal, all adding up to US$375.»

Dr Chombo said apart from helping prevent loss of life on the country’s roads, stakeholders should also work towards stemming veldfires.

«A fire outbreak which occurred in Hurungwe District on the 23rd of July 2011 has left 10 000 homeless from Murimbika, Dinhika, Tanasi, Runganga and Mugandani villages.

«Assistance has been rendered to these families in the form of tents, blankets and US$150 per household.

«Furthermore, an appeal has been made to humanitarian organisations to a*sist the families to rebuild and recover from the tragedy.

«The public is being urged to refrain from starting fires wantonly as this does not only damage the environment but also threatens lives and livelihoods.»-The Sunday Mail
